Lumoral, a light-activated antibacterial treatment developed by Finnish researchers, is demonstrating significant potential in treating advanced gum disease, according to a study published by Nature on Friday.
The LumoKaunas2023 study, which began in August 2023 and is ongoing in Lithuania, has shared preliminary findings. To date, approximately two-thirds (67%) of participants using the device have experienced a 50% reduction in the number of deep gum pockets. Also, four participants eradicated deep gum pockets entirely.
“The results are significantly better than those of the participants in the control group,” the study stated.
The Lumoral device combines a specialized antibacterial mouthwash with dual-light therapy. It has previously shown efficacy in managing early-stage periodontitis, and this study aims to assess its effectiveness in more severe cases. So far, the progress of 38 participants out of a target group of 60 has been evaluated.
The ongoing research builds on prior findings and seeks to provide further evidence of Lumoral’s potential in addressing severe gum disease.
