A Board-Certified Dermatologist’s Skin Care Secrets

When it comes to glowing, healthy skin, there’s no shortage of advice — but how do you separate skin care fact from fiction?

Many of us are guilty of swapping products too often or over-cleansing in search of instant results, only to end up with irritation and breakouts without realizing we’re weakening our skin barrier. Over-exfoliation, skipping moisturizer and neglecting SPF can further strip away essential hydration, leaving skin vulnerable and reactive.

Dr. Alison Dempsey

To cut through the noise, we turned to Dr. Alison Dempsey, a board-certified dermatologist based in New York City. With years of experience treating a wide range of skin concerns, she knows what truly works — and what’s just marketing hype. Through her blog, The Amaranthine Collective, she educates readers on science-backed skin care strategies that stand the test of time.

We sat down with Dr. Dempsey as she dished on the essential skin care secrets everyone should know — plus, the biggest mistakes to avoid for healthy skin.

What’s the most important skin care advice you give your patients?

Consistency is key. Skin care isn’t about quick fixes — it’s about sticking to a routine that works for your skin type. The most effective approach is often the simplest: a well-formulated regimen you can maintain daily. Trendy, complicated routines don’t outperform consistency and too many products can do more harm than good.

Why is sunscreen often mentioned as a must-have?

If there’s one thing that makes the most significant long-term difference, it’s daily SPF. UV exposure leads to premature aging, hyperpigmentation and collagen breakdown, so wearing sunscreen (even on cloudy days!) is the best investment in your skin’s future.

you emphasize skin barrier health. Why is that important?

Many people over-exfoliate or strip their skin with harsh cleansing products. A damaged skin barrier can lead to sensitivity, breakouts and inflammation. Prioritize gentle cleansing, hydration and lipid-rich moisturizers to keep your skin resilient.

How much does diet impact skin health?

While diet isn’t the root cause of all skin concerns, certain nutrients can support skin health. Omega-3 fatty acids (found in salmon, walnuts and flaxseeds) help reduce inflammation, while antioxidants (from berries, leafy greens and green tea) combat oxidative stress. On the flip side, excessive dairy and high-glycemic foods have been linked to acne in some individuals. It’s all about balance!

Ready To Find Your Perfect Routine?

Dr. Dempsey’s insights reinforce a core truth about skin care — it doesn’t need to be complicated to be effective. A strong routine is built on consistency, with a focus on daily SPF, maintaining barrier health and using ingredients that truly support skin function.

Of course, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. Your skin changes with the seasons, environment and even lifestyle factors like stress and diet. That’s why a personalized approach is key.
