The dental surgeon that allowed a prison guard to extract teeth from an inmate in 2020 has now been granted an absolute discharge by a Supreme Court judge.
Justice Melanie Del Rizzo found “that although Dr. Louis Bourget violated his position of authority and trust, convicting him of a criminal offence and putting him in custody would serve neither the dentist nor the public,” reported CTV News.
Last year, Bourget pleaded guilty to the assault. His defense team sought the absolute discharge, arguing a criminal conviction would end his career. Del Rizzo received approximately 70 letters of support for Bourget from his colleagues and patients.
The Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador dental boards have disciplined Bourget and his legal fees and fines have cost him around $1 million.
