What to Expect When Getting a Dental Filling – Summit Dental Health

When it comes to needing a filling, there’s no need to be uneasy! The procedure is fairly quick and done right in the dental office. In fact, most people will receive at least one filling in their lifetime. But it’s normal to wonder what the procedure will entail so you can be prepared.

What is a filling?

Dental fillings are used to repair or restore teeth. The most common cause of needing a filling is a cavity. They can also be used to repair broken teeth, or teeth that have been worn down.

How is the procedure done?

When you get a filling, your dentist will first numb the area to ease any sort of discomfort you may feel. The affected area is then cleaned and cleared of any decay to prepare it for the filling. Once this is complete, the dentist will fill the cleaned-out area with the filling recommended for you — either composite (plastic) or amalgam (silver). After that, you’re good to go!

Is it normal for teeth to hurt after filling?

A tooth that has just had a filling placed will be more sensitive to hot and cold foods, air temperature, and the pressure of biting. This sensitivity should resolve within a few days. If discomfort persists, contact your dentist.

If you think you may need a filling, call your dentist and schedule an appointment today. This can help ensure that tooth decay doesn’t continue to develop, and any pain you may be experiencing from broken teeth can be relieved.
